Problems

  1. Many of the deep-sea going fishermen are caught by the authorities in neighboring countries on international border issues. This has given them mental agony and utmost anguish and strain to their relatives. They are also unaware of what is happening to each other.
  2. Shark fish workers are constantly away from home. They go from place to place in search of sharks. The duration per voyage is 25 to 30 days. After every voyage they stay for a stint at land and are busy with the preparation for undertaking the next voyage. This makes them sojourners and aliens to their home, children and people.
  3. There is no regular income to the family. The share from each voyage is generally settled at the time of going home from their fishing base. This often takes few months. In the meantime they have no practice of sending money by Demands Draft, Money Order or Cheque for the daily requirements of the family. This lands the family often in debts. The wife or the mother is forced to go to the moneylenders, friends and relatives for money with jewellery as mortgage. This puts them perpetually in debts.
  4. The earnings of the male members are often drained by settling their debts. This once again forces them to borrow money for their day-to-day expenses and for their return journey to the fishing centers. This vicious circle of debt continues unabated.
  5. Very often the borrowings are not settled fully. This leads to accumulation of liabilities.
  6. The borrower should pay monthly interest to the lender. The moneylender will create problems to the family members for interest and for the repayment of loan if it is not paid on time.
  7. As the male members are always away from home the women are forced to borrow money to run the family, which often puts them into many problems.
  8. In addition, since the fishermen are in their fishing centres, women have additional responsibilities of taking the sick to hospitals, attending functions, festivals and other important social gathers.
  9. The fishermen have to pay higher than the market price for diesel as they are not the natives of the place and find it difficult to get supplies.
  10. Workers prefer to go for fishing in the boats that have tape recorder, GPS, fish finder, etc. The boat owners, without these facilities find it difficult to get required crew members.
